Program Lead of the Young Academic Award

Nancy Murphy
Project Manager YAA
Too often, academic research and industry practice operate in parallel rather than in partnership. The Young Academic Award deliberately creates a bridge between the two by inviting research that speaks directly to the role of finance in enabling sustainable growth, resilience, and inclusion.

The World Alliance Young Academic Award is a great opportunity for talented researchers with an interest in the financial industry to have their ideas known to those who can put their ideas into practice

The Young Academic Award reflects an important belief: that the future of finance depends not only on capital and technology, but on ideas—and on the people capable of developing them. By giving young scholars visibility, recognition, and a platform to engage with the global financial community, the award strengthens the broader ecosystem in which financial innovation and responsible growth can thrive. Encouraging research from diverse academic backgrounds and geographic contexts strengthens the collective knowledge base on which financial centers can draw.

I support this award as it has a strong emphasis on applied relevance. Too often, academic research and industry practice operate in parallel rather than in partnership. The Young Academic Award deliberately creates a bridge between the two by inviting research that speaks directly to the role of finance in enabling sustainable growth, resilience, and inclusion.

The structure of the award—culminating in the opportunity for selected winners to present their work to the World Alliance community—reinforces this connection. It signals that academic insights are not only welcome but needed in conversations about the future of financial centers. This exchange benefits both sides: practitioners gain access to rigorous, research-backed insights, while scholars gain exposure to real-world constraints and policy considerations.

It has been a privilege to be involved in this prize for the past three years, receiving and reviewing entries from young academics from across the globe. Each year, we receive submissions from countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the UK, North America, and South America. This is truly a global competition. Each submission is judged not by the caliber of the academic institution nor on the credentials of the submitter but solely by the caliber of the submission, giving each applicant an equal chance of winning. It is a fair and just competition, which I am proud to be associated with.

For these reasons, I see the Young Academic Award not simply as a prize, but as a meaningful contribution to shaping a more sustainable and inclusive financial system.
