The World Islamic Economic Forum began from a modest beginning as the Organisation of Islamic Corporation (OIC) Business Forum, held on 15 October 2003 in conjunction with the tenth OIC Summit in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It was an occasion that brought together government leaders, captains of industry, academicians, regional experts, professionals and corporate managers to discuss opportunities for business partnerships in the Muslim world.
Then in 2004, the second OIC Business Forum in Kuala Lumpur marked a momentous occasion. It shaped the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) and the subsequent convening of the first WIEF in Kuala Lumpur the following year.
WIEF stands to promote global commerce and economic wellbeing while inciting Islamic ethics of peace, fairness and equality. This meant the Forum was open to, and included, all Muslim countries as well as non-Muslim ones from around the world.
